It has been said that one of the marks of an educated person is their ability to express life truths in a pithy and succinct way so that others can't help but remember the point being made. Some of these famous quotes are so well known that we forget they originally came from the mind and lips of someone who may or may not be remembered. The expressed truths are certainly common knowledge. Why are quotes important? Quotes are important as a way of expressing ourselves. Sometimes the famous quotes are so well known that we can't say something more effectively than it has already been stated. So long as it is not stated in a way that misrepresents the commonly accepted usage, it is often a very good method for showing others that you are well read. If you use too many direct quotes without taking precautions to avoid over use, your speech or document looks like a reference library of famous quotations. This leaves the listener bored and inattentive in most instances. Humor Famous quotes that are humorous are one effective method to using humor in your talks or writings. These quotations should be used sparingly so that your speech doesn't become simply a list of trite statements. You can easily use a dose of humor from another speaker to liven up your own approach if you are called upon to give a speech or present a class. You will, of course need to be aware of generational issues with humor. Some humorous quotes are funny during the time when they became well known, but the environment may have changed so the humor is no longer politically correct. Wisdom Many famous quotes express wise sayings that transcend the local environment and the time frame on which they are set. For example, many proverbs, both Biblical and otherwise express snippets of wisdom that apply to people of many nations, cultures and age groups. Historical references Some famous quotes are set in a time and place in history that is unique. These quotations may also apply on a broader scale. When you use such sayings in a different context than the original usage, you can add emphasis to the point you are making, or you can cheapen the original quote. Caution should be exercised in choosing well known quotations in a different way so that you don't make a caricature out of a portrait. Trivia Using famous quotes as the basis for trivia questions is entertaining and informative as well. Game shows are often built around trivia facts and quotations. Whether or not there are prizes attached, trivia questions correctly answered make one feel proud and knowledgeable. Looking at and understanding the context of the quotations will lead to a more educated person, even if there is no university degree attached to your name. In days past, books of familiar quotations were often used to speakers and preachers. Today, however, with the availability of keyword searches by the major search engines, you can zero in on a quote for nearly any subject you want to highlight with words to the wise.
