Great and Free Ways to Calm Your Nerves

By: Richard Achen

A few good relaxation techniques can save your life, because stress is more than just unpleasant it's also not healthy. Disciplined practices such as yoga can help relieve that stress, but what if you don't have the time? Maybe you need to try a few of these simple ways to relax.

1. Give somebody a big, loving hug. Hugging usually means you're getting a hug as well..and there is nothing more relaxing than being in someone Else's arms.

2. Do it in a different way. Go do something you usually don't i.e. a member of the maintenance staff, or eat lunch on the roof. Just doing anything that breaks you out of your habitual patterns can calm your nerves.

3. Give yourself a long warm shower. It calms your muscles, and gives you a break from those more stressful activities. Some say that an alternating hot and cold shower is even more relaxing.

4. Try observing your mind. Spot those nasty thoughts that lurk just below the surface (hunger, worry, a phone call you need to make) and you can resolve them and feel more calmed. If you practice this awareness exercise, it may become one of your favorite stress relieving techniques.

5. Try laughing. The best way for me to laugh is to stand in front of a mirror, stark naked! That always gives me a good laugh; especially first thing in the morning. Just be sure it is a good 'belly laugh', one that makes your sides hurt and you become short of breath. Not only will it relax you but it burns calories too!

6. Listen to music. Keep your favorites at the office, in the car, or wherever you'll need it most. Music can soothe that savage beast that is found in all of us. Choose the tunes that bring up happy thoughts and use those to help you.

7. Exit the room for a while. This can really help if the things in the room or related to it are causing your stressful thoughts. Why not remove yourself for a little while? Just remember to not slam the door after you!

8. Breath deeply. Try five deep breaths through your nose. Close your eyes and pay attention only to your breathing while doing this. It's like a mini-meditation, and might be the most effective of the quick relaxation techniques.

9. Drink something decaffeinated. Caffeine is a stimulant and causes a rapid heartbeat and increased mental stimulation. This can bring on feelings of stress and anxiety.

10. Take a break. If you have at least ten minutes to spare, going for a walk is one of the best stress release techniques. While you're at it, admire the view or go and talk to that person in technique two.

11. Take off your shoes. Remember that scene in Pretty Woman where Richard Gere took his shoes and socks off. That reconnection with Nature has a remarkable effect.
