Knowing how to communicate effectively with your partner can be a deciding factor to saving a marriage from floundering out of control. Both speaking and listening effectively is crucial to understanding the issues you both could be having. Communication in marriage is very important. If you are in a marriage where communicating is difficult, it is a good idea to find resources to help you save a marriage in trouble. You will learn how best to deal with your own unique situation and move on to happier times. Humans communicate in many ways - in a marriage we communicate by touching, hugging, kissing and sex is a big part of that. Most of all though, we communicate by talking. Learning how to talk to each and hearing what each other has to say is the basis of true intimacy in a marriage. Saying things that are deep and personal and to know that your partner has heard and understood you, is deeply satisfying. Many people feel that their partner doesn't listen to them. So what can you do? There is a very good way to go about it - use 'I statements' for example, I need, I feel, I want, I desire and check to make sure your partner is listening. The tone you use in your voice is important - make sure there is no undertone of anger behind it and keep your voice gentle and soft. Your partner will then be more likely to listen to what you are saying. You also need to be fully committed to really listening and hearing what your partner has to say as well. Really listening can be a hard thing to do. What you will want to do is react and express your side of the story, so you need to stay calm and relaxed. So take a deep breath and decide to listen and not to react. Once you have the communication flowing, you can express your concerns with the knowledge that your partner is hearing what you have to say. When you are both committed to save a relationship at risk, you can devise a plan of action and stick to it. Always remember - you don't have to do it alone. There are many resources available to couples who really want to save a marriage/relationship.
