Neuro Linguistic Programming and changing behavior

By: Laura Packer

In its basic sense Neuro Linguistic Programming is a set of tools that aims to build a set of transferable skills by programming the subconscious mind. But learning NLP and what it is and how it affects people is really of no use, unless you actually apply it in real life. NLP is first and foremost aimed at improving a person's life, by allowing him to overcome negative subconscious limitations he or she is initially is unaware of.

Modeling is creating maps or structures of experience from people who excel at an ability. Once a certain model fails, you simply go back to the drawing board and refine until it works perfectly. The model is then broken down even further to simple patterns that can easily be taught to other people.

Aside from modeling, maps is another term that anyone will encounter repeatedly in Neuro Linguistic Programming, as it is the core of a person's unique perception of the world. Maps are not permanent, are not something you are born with, can be changed, created or deleted. The way you yourself feel, see and experience the world is your very own internal map.

No one has to live with a certain map forever, with Neuro Linguistic Programming one can learn to examine and tweak a map. Identifying and correcting incorrect maps is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improving a person wholly. As maps are changed, a person can suddenly feel less depressed and happier for example.

There are tons of other ways to improving a person through Neuro Linguistic Programming. Aside from the above, other NLP methods include and not limited to anchoring, swish, reframing to name a few. 3 of the most common NLP techniques are discussed in this article.

Anchoring is a common Neuro Linguistic Programming method that shows and teaches people how to form associations between our emotions and our senses. A connection is formed between an emotional state and our senses when a stimuli is introduced. Triggering the stimuli triggers the emotions as well, and this so called anchor can be created and manipulated anytime.

Looking at things in another point of view can be considered another Neuro Linguistic Programming technique called Reframing. Changing perspectives can lead to huge shifts in attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and so forth. NLP therapists that apply this technique usually flip the point of view from either a negative meaning to a positive meaning.

Last but not the least, we take a look at the swish method of Neuro Linguistic Programming, which is a process that disrupts a thought that leads to a bad behavior with one that leads to a positive one. In this method, you relax, close your eyes and focus on a event that lead to negative effects for example in basketball taking that last second shot and missing it, then introducing an alternate reality wherein you actually do make the shot. Swish method reprograms your whole mind and body from old to new, and into whichever way you like.

As can be seen there are many more techniques that need to be discussed in detail and one article can never be enough to do it. Maybe it is time for you to take Neuro Linguistic Programming a try. But no matter the technique, it all depends on the desire of the subject to improve that is still most important.
