The Need for a Depression Counselor

By: Mike Justin

Depression is one of the human emotions that is most powerful. It is one of those emotions if you leave untreated, could lead to something more serious for those suffering from it severely.
Everybody feels unhappy at times. That is natural. But clinical depression is something much more than that. It is a disease. But you can treat it.
So when is depression clinical depression?
First off, a person can feel hopelessly sad. Where a person feels everything is pointless. Or life is not worth living. Which can lead to thoughts and feelings of suicide.
This usual lasts for two weeks or more. When you have depression that lasts that long, you are moving into the clinical depression state.
And when you get to that point, you need to see a counselor. Don't leave this condition untreated if you find yourself at that point. Take my word for it, I have learned this from my experience in depression counseling.
So once you are at that point, you have to do certain things. Because sometimes imbalances in your body or chemistry in your brain can cause depression, you may need to treat it medically. You would use antidepressant drugs to treat it.
Of course as a counselor, I prefer to treat it through depression counseling. A counselor can help a person get to grips with the root of their depression.
They can also try other forms of therapy like cognitive behavior therapy which addresses how you think. The objective is to confront those negative thoughts and turn them around to a positive.
A therapist can also help you use relaxation techniques. If the depression is caused by stress, using relaxation will help combat that form of stress.
Most of all a depression counselor will be the most effective person to find out what is causing the depression.
They are good in finding out if there was something that happened recently that may cause this. They can look and see if there is something in the past that is causing this. Or they can find out if it is caused by something going on in your body. Whether there was some physiological change.
Depression is a condition that is treatable. But when you don't know what caused it, you will not be able to treat it. That is where finding a good therapist or counselor can help tremendously.
