Why You Must Have Goals

By: Nicola Johns

Can you imagine an aeroplane taking off from an airport with no set destination?

Visualise it it flying around without purpose until it ran out of fuel and fell from the sky?

I can’t, yet so many people are like this plane.

They fly around without purpose in life, never really going anywhere or achieving anything until they run out of fuel.

Do you ever wonder why some people are so very successful, yet others are not?

It is because they set goals. Your goals are your flight plan and map to your destination.

If you don’t know where you are heading to, how will you know when you reach your destination? If you don’t know what you want to achieve, how will you know when you have achieved the goal?

Your goals not only tell you where you are aiming for, but tell you when you arrive. They give you something to work towards and a target to aim for.

I am sure there is a time in your life when you really worked towards something you wanted and were passionate and motivated about it. A lot of people get to their goals and then have no idea what to do next.

When you arrive at one set of goals, move the targets, advance them and push yourself to achieve more.

For example, if your goal is to earn $1000 a month, when you reach it, refocus the goal to earn $2000 a month. Then when you hit that, move it on to $4000 a month.

Your goals need to be big enough to challenge and stretch you, though not unachievable. If you set goals that are unachievable for you, you may well give up because they seem unachievable. If they are just out of your reach, they will stretch you and get you used to working towards goals.

Likewise, if your goals are too easy, you won’t feel challenged enough to work towards them and will drift around again.

If you want to be the success you desire, you need goals, whether these are to have a happy family, a better job, more income or an incredible relationship. With a set of goals, you can set your flight path and destination and get to where you want to be.
